183rd IFRC Member

Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste is one of the youngest Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in the world. At its General Assembly in Seoul, South Korea on November 11, 2005, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies formally declared CVTL as its 183rd member.

Community Based First Aid

In the area of Community-Based First Aid (CBFA), CVTL's primary aim is to improve Timor Leste's maternal and child health situation. An essential tenet of this is hygiene and basic health and first aid education.

Our programmes enable individuals to become more self-reliant in both treatment and prevention of common diseases and health-related issues.

CBFA activities include public awareness raising as well as the provision of various forms of assistance. This is achieved through our national network of Red Cross volunteers; improving the capacities of rural people to learn and proliferate knowledge. This has direct implications for quality of life.

Community based first aid can be as simple as talking about washing hands before eating, or discussing the dangers of consuming unboiled or dirty water.

An important part of our approach is tailoring the method of education to each village,  rather than delivering a standardised message.
