Access to safe water and adequate sanitation facilities is essential to living a happy, healthy life. Throughout Timor-Leste, the Red Cross Society is trying to restore and introduce these basic necessities, which are still not enjoyed by all. So far, CVTL has built over 150 water and sanitation facilities throughout the country. These facilities include public and home lavatories, water tanks, wells and irrigation systems. This work improves the hygiene and health of countless individuals and families, with the direct impact of improving quality of living. As well as easing the harsh realities of poverty, such work assists communities in their long and arduous journey towards escaping its grip. The construction of water and sanitation amenities is a fundamental aspect of Red Cross work, and one of our central focuses here in Timor-Leste. Of course, ensuring the longevity of our work is also essential throughout all CVTL projects. This is achieved by community involvement in all stages of the implementation process, ensuring that once intensive Red Cross involvement ceases, communities are able to maintain and care for infrastructure independently. With every water and sanitation project, CVTL also conducts Community-Based First Aid and hygiene training, ensuring that they are used to their full potential.
