CVTL Baucau Strengthens Community Preparedness Through Family Disaster Response Activities in Gariuai

On 17–18 November 2025, the CVTL Baucau Branch carried out a series of disaster preparedness activities in Uatu-Ua Sub-Village, Gariuai Village, Baucau Villa Post Administrative, Baucau Municipality. The initiative focused on disseminating information about the Family Disaster Response Plan (FDRP), reaching a total of 79 households.

According to Cipriano Magno, the CVTL Baucau Branch Coordinator, the activity aimed to strengthen community resilience by equipping families with practical knowledge on how to organize and share responsibilities before, during, and after disaster events.

Magno emphasized that the Family Disaster Response Plan plays a crucial role in helping communities understand immediate actions and coordinated steps during emergencies. By improving household-level preparedness, CVTL hopes to ensure that community members can respond more effectively when facing disasters such as floods or other emergencies. As part of this initiative, CVTL also distributed dignity kits including soap to Uata-Ua EBF School, supporting basic hygiene needs for students and teachers.

In addition to the information sessions, CVTL facilitated a disaster simulation exercise focused on flood and overflow hazards. The simulation involved community members, students, and teachers, who practiced evacuation procedures and safety measures. The activity received strong support from local authorities, including the Commander of the Civil Protection Authority of Baucau Municipality and his team, the Municipal SM-PCGD representative, the Fire Department, CRS, and local authorities.

A total of 74 participants took part in the simulation, comprising 41 females and 33 males. The two-day activity underscored the importance of coordinated disaster preparedness in vulnerable areas and highlighted the value of community participation in strengthening resilience. The initiative was funded by the Gabinete de Apoio à Sociedade Civil (GASC), demonstrating continued collaboration between government institutions and humanitarian actors in enhancing disaster readiness at the local level.
