CVTL Joins Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2025 in Geneva

Geneva, Switzerland, 2–6 June 2025; The Timor-Leste Red Cross Society (Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste, CVTL) took part in the 8th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2025), co-chaired by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the Government of Switzerland. Held under the theme “Every Day Counts: Act for Resilience Today,” the forum brought together global leaders, practitioners, and stakeholders to assess progress on the Sendai Framework and accelerate inclusive action for resilience.

Representing CVTL, Disaster Management Coordinator Ms. Emidia Belo joined the national delegation of Timor-Leste, which included officials from the Ministry of Interior, the Civil Protection Authority (CPA), and the Embassy of Timor-Leste in Geneva.

Throughout the week, the delegation engaged in high-level discussions, thematic sessions, workshops, and bilateral meetings—sharing Timor-Leste’s experiences while learning from international best practices in disaster risk reduction (DRR).

Key takeaways for Timor-Leste included:

  • Support for developing a National DRR Strategy

  • Advancing the “Early Warning for All” (EW4All) initiative

  • Establishment of a National Civil Protection Council

  • Promotion of inclusive, community-led DRR efforts

  • Strengthening Nature-based Solutions (NbS)

  • Enhancing risk-informed financing and anticipatory action

With over 3,600 participants from 164 countries, GP2025 reaffirmed the global commitment to building resilience in the face of increasing disaster and climate-related risks.

CVTL’s participation was made possible through the generous support of the American Red Cross (AmCross) and the Australian Red Cross (ARC).
