Ermera, 15 September 2026 — The Timor-Leste Red Cross (CVTL) Ermera Branch, with support from the Strengthening Disaster Readiness and Response (SDRR) Project Officer, volunteers, and community members, conducted disaster risk mitigation activities in Urahou, Buibaru Sub-Village, Leimea Leten Village, Atsabe Administrative Post, Ermera Municipality.
The activity was carried out as part of community-based efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and reduce risks facing local communities, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
According to João Maia, CVTL Ermera Branch Project Officer for the Strengthening Disaster Readiness and Response (SDRR) project, the activity involved eight participants, including seven men and one woman. The participants carried out mitigation actions identified through the Community Action Plan (CAP).
“These activities aim to reduce disaster risks and increase protection for communities and their homes, particularly from the threat of flooding and landslides that may occur due to heavy rainfall and increased water levels in rivers,” João Maia said.
The community-led mitigation actions are intended to help residents prepare for potential hazards and strengthen their capacity to respond to disaster risks in their area.
The activity was supported by the American Red Cross (AmCross) as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster risk reduction and community resilience in Timor-Leste.
