Timor-Leste Red Cross (CVTL) Joins Asia Pacific Surge Meeting in Jakarta

Jakarta, 6–7 August 2025 – The Timor-Leste Red Cross (CVTL) was represented by Disaster Management Coordinator Ms. Emidia Belo at the Asia Pacific Surge Meeting, held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The two-day event gathered humanitarian leaders from across the region to discuss strategies for enhancing surge capacity in disaster response.

Ms. Belo expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to participate, highlighting that the meeting’s objective was to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, introduce the Surge Ready Framework, identify challenges and barriers in capacity strengthening, and foster collaboration among Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (RCRC) partners in the Asia Pacific region.

The meeting brought together 32 participants from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Southeast Asia National Societies (SEA NSs), the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), Australian Red Cross (ARC), American Red Cross (AmCross), Canadian Red Cross, Japanese Red Cross (JRCS), Norwegian Red Cross, German Red Cross, China Red Cross, and Hong Kong Red Cross. This diverse representation underscored the importance of regional partnerships in disaster preparedness and response.

Key outcomes from the meeting included the development of the Surge Ready Roadmap for 2026–2028 and the drafting of a joint statement to be presented at the upcoming Southeast Asia leaders’ meeting in Kuala Lumpur next month. These outputs are expected to guide future collaborative efforts and strengthen the collective disaster response capacity across the region.
