CVTL Strengthens Capacity on Protection, Gender Equality and Inclusion Through Refresher Training

24–25 September 2026, Dili — The Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL) conducted a two-day Refresher Training on Protection, Gender Equality and Inclusion (PGI) from 24–25 September 2026 at the CVTL Training Hall, National Headquarters (NHQ), Formosa, Dili.

The training was officially opened by the Secretary-General of CVTL, Mr. Agapito da Silva, and aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding and capacity in the basic principles and concepts of Protection, Gender Equality and Inclusion (PGI), as well as their practical application in humanitarian action and emergency situations.

According to Joalita Teresa Magno, CVTL PGI Officer, the training covered key topics including PGI and Safeguarding in humanitarian action, inclusion of people with disabilities, the Minimum Standards for PGI in Emergencies, and Psychosocial Support. Participants engaged in interactive learning methods, including simulations, group discussions, action plan development, and evaluations, to strengthen their ability to apply the knowledge and skills gained in their respective branches and programmes.

The training brought together 18 participants, comprising nine women and nine men, representing CVTL Branches in Ainaro, Covalima, Viqueque, Lautém, Manufahi, and Manatuto. The sessions were facilitated by the CVTL PGI Team, with technical contributions and support from the Australian Red Cross (ARC), Ra’es Hadomi Timor-Oan (RHTO), PRADET, and the Secretariat of State for Equality (SEI).

Facilitators and technical contributors included Joalita Teresa Magno, CVTL PGI Officer; May Maloney, Senior Specialist in Protection, Gender and Inclusion (PGI) from the Australian Red Cross; and Olandino Gomes, Field Staff from RHTO.

Through this refresher training, CVTL continues to strengthen the capacity of its staff and volunteers to promote safe, inclusive, and gender-responsive approaches across humanitarian programmes and emergency response activities, ensuring that the needs, dignity, and rights of all people are considered in humanitarian action.
