8-9 November 2024, Baucau – The Timor-Leste Red Cross (Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste – CVTL) successfully conducted its 5th Biennial National Assembly in Baucau Municipality, bringing together 34 participants, including CVTL leaders, board members from national and municipal levels, and senior management. The assembly was attended by 12 women and 22 men, with international support and oversight from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) as observers. This significant gathering served as a platform to review and enhance CVTL’s programs in disaster resilience, health, clean water, youth empowerment, and livelihoods.
With the participation of the CVTL President, Ms. Madalena Hanjam, along with the Vice President and other senior officials, the assembly revisited the organization’s Strategic Plan, undertaking a detailed assessment of progress and challenges. During the assembly, by-laws were revised and ratified, reinforcing governance structures to support the organization’s mission. Additionally, the event included the election of new regional leaders who will serve a two-year term, ensuring continuity and growth across CVTL’s regional programs.
Secretary-General Mr. Luis Pedro Pinto shared insights into the achievements from the past two years, highlighting significant progress in disaster preparedness, health initiatives, and community empowerment. He also presented a roadmap for the upcoming year, which was unanimously approved by the board members. This forward-looking agenda emphasizes continued development in essential areas, aiming to strengthen CVTL’s impact and community reach.
The assembly’s success was made possible with financial support from the ICRC, IFRC, and the Australian Red Cross, whose contributions enabled this collaborative event. Their support underscores the international commitment to CVTL’s mission, empowering the organization to pursue its vital goals across Timor-Leste.
