CVTL Strengthens Volunteer Capacity for Epidemic Control in Oe-Cusse

Oe-Cusse, 22–23 July 2025 – The Health Department of Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL), in collaboration with CVTL Oe-Cusse Branch, conducted a two-day training program aimed at building the capacity of volunteers in epidemic control and response. The training focused on improving community readiness to tackle common communicable diseases in the region.

According to Mr. Domingos Tapen, Coordinator of the CVTL Oe-Cusse Branch, the training aimed to equip volunteers with essential knowledge and skills to respond effectively to outbreaks of diseases such as dengue fever, diarrhea, rabies, and acute respiratory infections (ISPA). “This initiative is part of our continued efforts to strengthen community health resilience,” he stated.

The main facilitator, Mr. Orlando de Carvalho, explained that the training combined theoretical and practical approaches. Participants engaged in group discussions on epidemic control principles, hands-on practice, and door-to-door health education simulations. “The goal was to prepare volunteers for real-world situations where quick and informed action is crucial,” he said.

A total of 20 volunteers took part in the training, with equal representation of 10 women and 10 men. The program was made possible with funding support from the Australian Red Cross (ARC), underscoring the importance of international partnerships in enhancing local health preparedness and response capacity.
