Covalima, 14 September 2026 — Flooding that occurred in May 2026 in Beco Village, Suai Administrative Post, Covalima Municipality, affected and contaminated community water sources that are essential for the daily needs of local residents.
In response to the impact of the floods, the Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL) Covalima Branch conducted a field assessment to identify the extent of the damage and assess the needs for water source rehabilitation. The assessment aimed to support the restoration of community access to clean, safe, and adequate water.
Based on the assessment findings, 19 community water wells located across three villages Beco, Bibi Atan, and Maucola in Beco Village were identified as requiring rehabilitation. These wells are important public water sources for communities that depend directly on them for their daily water needs.
The rehabilitation initiative aims to improve access to safe water while contributing to better public health, hygiene, and sanitation. It also supports community efforts to recover from the effects of the floods and strengthen their living conditions and resilience against future emergencies.
The activity is being implemented with the support of the Australian Red Cross (ARC) through the ARC-APRRF, in collaboration with CVTL National Headquarters (NHQ) and the CVTL Covalima Branch. This coordinated effort seeks to ensure that the response is aligned with the identified needs of affected communities and contributes to a sustainable recovery.
Through this initiative, CVTL and its partners continue to support flood-affected communities in restoring essential services and strengthening access to safe water, helping families recover and build greater resilience in the aftermath of disasters.
