First Steps Towards a Brighter Future: CVTL and Million Lighting Company Distribute Shoes to Students in Manatuto

Manatuto, 14-15 July 2024 – The Timor-Leste Red Cross (CVTL) has taken a significant step in supporting vulnerable communities by distributing shoes to students in Kay-Rala, Cara-Laclo, and Orlalan-Laklubar schools. This initiative is part of a larger joint venture with Million Lighting Company, aiming to provide essential resources to students across Timor-Leste’s 13 municipalities.

This collaborative effort will see a total of 7,000 pairs of shoes distributed to students, addressing a basic yet crucial need for young learners. The provision of shoes is expected to enhance students’ educational experiences by ensuring they have the necessary footwear to attend school regularly and comfortably.

Mrs. Nana Chua from Million Lighting Company expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I was so excited during my visit to Timor-Leste in the past, that I wanted to use my company and the charity work that we do to help those in need. In order for people to be successful in life, they need a good education; and I want to start with the basics – putting shoes on students’ feet and providing light to study. I feel very privileged that I can support this important cause to help young people on the important path of education.”

The initiative was officially launched today by Sra. Nana Chua and her team from Million Lighting Company, alongside the President and Secretary General of the CVTL, CVTL staff, teachers, and students. The event marked the beginning of a series of distributions that will continue throughout the coming months.

CVTL President highlighted the importance of this partnership, noting that providing shoes to students is a tangible way to improve their daily lives and educational outcomes. “This initiative goes beyond mere charity; it is an investment in our future generations, ensuring they have the basic tools needed to pursue their education without hindrance,” he said.

As the distribution progresses, both CVTL and Million Lighting Company remain committed to their mission of supporting education and improving living conditions for the youth of Timor-Leste. The collaboration underscores the power of community-driven efforts and international partnerships in creating meaningful change.
