Dili, 25 July 2026 – The Timor-Leste Red Cross (Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste – CVTL) Dili Branch officially welcomed 180 new volunteers during the 2026 New Volunteer Welcome Session held at the Presidential Palace in Dili. The event marked the beginning of the volunteers’ humanitarian journey, inspiring them to serve communities with dedication, compassion, and solidarity.
The opening ceremony featured remarks from Sr. Marcelino Albuquerque, Head of the National Society Development (NSD) and Youth Department and Acting Secretary General of CVTL, together with Mr. Octavio da Silva Monteiro, President of the Municipal Board Council of the CVTL Dili Branch. They emphasized that the welcome session was more than an introduction for new volunteers it was an opportunity to prepare and inspire them to become agents of positive change who uphold the Seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement while serving vulnerable communities across Timor-Leste.
The session also welcomed distinguished government representatives and guest speakers, including Mr. Mario Tilman, Director General of Youth at the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture; Mr. Januario Soares, a young humanitarian who shared his inspiring experience in community service; and Dra. Henriqueta Maria da Silva, Head of the Civil House at the Presidential Palace, who spoke about the importance of leadership, especially in empowering young people and women to contribute to national development.
During her address, Dra. Henriqueta highlighted the unique value of volunteerism, noting that while many activities today are driven by financial reward, CVTL volunteers continue to dedicate their time, skills, and energy without expecting payment. She praised their commitment to maintaining the true spirit of volunteerism and encouraged the new volunteers to continue serving communities with compassion and humanity.
The welcome session provided an opportunity for participants to learn from experienced speakers, build connections with fellow volunteers, and strengthen their understanding of the Red Cross mission. As they begin their volunteer journey, the 80 new volunteers are expected to play an important role in supporting humanitarian actions and strengthening community resilience throughout Timor-Leste.
