CVTL Hosts Annual Reflection and Planning Workshop to Strengthen Disaster Readiness in Timor-Leste

Dili, January 13–14, 2025 – The Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL) convened its Annual Reflection 2024 and Yearly Planning Workshop under the Strengthening Disaster Readiness and Response (SDRR) Program. Held at the Dom Bosco Training Hall, Comoro, Dili, the workshop focused on advancing disaster preparedness and response strategies in vulnerable communities across Timor-Leste.

The event was inaugurated by representatives from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the American Red Cross, alongside CVTL Secretary General, Mr. Luis Pedro Pinto. Highlighting the importance of collective action, Mr. Pinto remarked, “This workshop is an essential platform to reflect on our collective achievements, identify areas for improvement, and strengthen our strategies to support vulnerable communities going forward.”

Mr. Sazzad Ansari, representing the American Red Cross, emphasized the significance of partnerships in addressing the challenges faced by disaster-prone areas. He reiterated his organization’s commitment to programs that empower communities to anticipate and respond effectively to disasters. Additionally, the IFRC Focal Point encouraged the SDRR team to integrate the workshop’s outcomes into their 2025 plans to enhance the program’s implementation.

The two-day workshop aimed to bolster community resilience in Bobonaro, Covalima, and Ermera municipalities. Key objectives included reflecting on 2024 achievements, revising the 2025 Plan of Action to address emerging challenges, and fostering discussions on program quality, management strategies, and operational improvements.

Participants engaged in diverse activities such as reviewing operational achievements and financial expenditures, conducting a SWOT analysis of the SDRR program, and exploring innovative solutions to address challenges encountered in 2024. These discussions provided valuable insights for refining future approaches.

The event saw active participation from 33 CVTL officials, including 10 women and 23 men, representing various departments such as Disaster Management, Health, Finance, Human Resources, Administration, PMER, Communications and SDRR program officials, Department and Branch Coordinators. Supported by the American Red Cross, the workshop highlighted CVTL’s commitment to strengthening disaster readiness and response capabilities, paving the way for a safer and more resilient future for the people of Timor-Leste.
