CVTL Joins the 34th International Red Cross and Red Crescent Conference: A Global Commitment to Humanitarian Action in Geneva

The 34th International Red Cross and Red Crescent Conference took place from October 22 to October 31, 2024, in Geneva, Switzerland. Organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the conference served as a critical gathering for discussing humanitarian issues. Representatives from 196 states, including 191 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, participated in the event, making it one of the most comprehensive international humanitarian forums of the year.

The conference featured both the RCRC Statutory Meeting and the International Conference, providing a platform for addressing some of the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. Delegates and experts discussed concrete solutions for crises impacting communities around the world, ranging from natural disasters to complex political conflicts. The conference underscored the importance of humanitarian efforts in a time of increasing global tensions and natural calamities.

Kate Forbes, President of the IFRC, emphasized the essential role of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in a polarized world. In her opening remarks, Forbes said, “In an increasingly polarized world, the International Conference highlights the importance of our global Movement in tackling today’s complex challenges. The Red Cross and Red Crescent serve as an example of the best of humanity in turbulent times.” Her words reflected the organization’s dedication to bridging divides and providing impartial aid.

Mirjana Spoljaric, President of the ICRC, highlighted the urgent need for action in response to the devastating impact of armed conflicts worldwide. She said, “The unbearable levels of suffering caused by today’s conflicts demand immediate action. Too many communities are being destroyed and too many families torn apart in today’s warzones. The international community must urgently reaffirm its commitment to international humanitarian law and prioritize protecting civilians.” Spoljaric’s statement underscored the ICRC’s focus on advocating for stronger international humanitarian laws to protect vulnerable populations.

Timor-Leste was represented by a delegation from the Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL) and the Timor-Leste government. The CVTL delegation, which included President Mrs. Madalena Hanjam, Secretary General Mr. Luis Pedro Pinto, Youth President Ms. Domingas de Fatima Araujo, and External Relations Coordinator Ms. Vidiana Xareal, highlighted Timor-Leste’s commitment to humanitarian work and development. Representatives from Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Embassy in Geneva also attended, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to global cooperation.

Mrs. Madalena Hanjam, CVTL President, expressed her enthusiasm for the conference, stating, “We are happy to attend this conference. From this experience, we are better prepared and ready to provide humanitarian assistance in Timor-Leste.” Her remarks underscored CVTL’s determination to learn from and work alongside international partners in building stronger responses to local and regional crises.

CVTL representatives utilized the conference as an opportunity to connect with other National Societies, strengthening partnerships that will support Timor-Leste’s humanitarian projects. This collaborative spirit aligns with the overarching goals of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which emphasizes solidarity and mutual support among its members. The CVTL team’s meetings with partners reinforced Timor-Leste’s active role within the global humanitarian community.

The conference concluded with a reaffirmed commitment to placing affected communities at the heart of humanitarian initiatives. Discussions underscored the importance of adapting to emerging challenges, such as climate change, migration, and conflict, with a focus on proactive solutions. The 34th International Red Cross and Red Crescent Conference provided a vital platform for humanitarian leaders to collaborate on strategies that address the needs of vulnerable populations worldwide.
