Dili, October 23-24, 2023 — The CVTL (Timor-Leste Red Cross) Department of Disaster Management, Health, Youth, and Organization Development made a significant contribution to Timor-Leste’s climate resilience efforts at the Fifth National Conference on Climate Change. Held at the CCD Convention Center in Dili, this event gathered government officials, local and international partners, students, and community leaders to discuss strategies and innovations aimed at mitigating climate change effects in Timor-Leste. The theme of the conference focused on strengthening climate action to enhance resilience in vulnerable regions.
During the conference, Mrs. Maria Pascoela, Livelihood Manager for CVTL, presented the organization’s Early Warning System initiative. This system, which is already active in the municipalities of Lautem, Viqueque, and Manatuto, provides local communities with timely alerts and guidance to prepare for climate-related events such as floods, droughts, and storms. Mrs. Pascoela emphasized that the initiative is a critical step in safeguarding vulnerable populations, noting that enhanced preparedness contributes directly to the safety and resilience of Timorese communities in the face of climate uncertainties.
The conference highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts across various sectors. Representatives from key ministries, educational institutions, and non-governmental organizations joined the event, signaling a shared commitment to advancing Timor-Leste’s climate resilience through community-centered approaches. CVTL extended its gratitude to all attendees, particularly students and youth, for their enthusiasm and dedication to climate action.
With a united focus on building resilience, CVTL and its partners are fostering a future where Timor-Leste is better equipped to handle the impacts of climate change. The event reinforced a collective determination to protect livelihoods and empower communities, marking an essential milestone in Timor-Leste’s journey toward a more resilient future.
