Clean Water is a Lifeline: Makadique Water Project

For years, the residents of Makadique in Viqueque Municipality struggled to collect water every day. Mothers, children, and the elderly often walked up to four kilometers a day to access water, which impacted their health and quality of life. Recognizing this critical need, CVTL (Timor-Leste Red Cross) started a comprehensive water supply project in 2016, transforming life for 15 villages and providing safe water access to 4,265 people.

Makadique now has a reliable water system, with 80 tap-stands, five large water tanks, and Facilities Management Group (GMFs) that keep the maintenance of the water system functioning. Community leaders, like Antonio dos Reis, Head of Makadique Village, and Muhamat Nurhidayat, GMF leader, expressed deep gratitude to CVTL for their support and dedication in making this happen. This project has not only improved health and sanitation for our community, but also strengthened the community’s pride and sense of ownership.

The impact of the project extends to the Makadique Health Post, where clean water now allows for safer, and more hygienic patient care. As Mr. Placio da Silva, Head of the Health Post, said, “Thanks to CVTL, our healthcare services are now safer, cleaner, and more effective. This project has made a profound difference in our lives.” The success of this important water project is a testament to our community’s unity and commitment. Together, we have embraced the responsibility of caring for this vital resource. Let’s continue to protect and maintain our water system, use it wisely, and ensure it remains available for our children and future generations. By working together and with CVTL, we have created a foundation for health, hope, and resilience—a foundation we must sustain with pride.

On behalf of the Makadique community, we extend our heartfelt thanks to CVTL. Your support has gone beyond simply providing clean water—it has equipped us with the tools to manage our future. You have listened to us, collaborated with us, and empowered us. We are forever grateful for your partnership and the dedication of your team, and we hope similar projects will continue to reach communities in need across Timor-Leste. Thank you for walking this journey with us and making such a lasting impact.

Through this collaboration, Makadique’s residents live with new hope and are committed to carrying this positive change forward. This story shows that when a community and an organization work together, lasting and transformative change is not only possible but achievable.
