CVTL Enhances Staff Capacity on Protection, Gender, and Inclusion with PGI Orientation

From 12 to 16 May 2025, the Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL) Department of Administration and Human Resources organized a comprehensive Protection, Gender, and Inclusion (PGI) Orientation Session at the CVTL National Headquarters in Formosa, Dili. The training targeted senior management, project and program managers, and key officials, aiming to strengthen awareness and practices around PGI principles within the organization.

In his opening address, Mr. Md. Sazzad Ansari, American Red Cross Country Representative in Timor-Leste, highlighted the significance of the orientation. He emphasized that the initiative aimed to increase participants’ understanding of PGI-related issues, ensuring that CVTL’s activities whether in communities, at the workplace, or with partners are conducted in ways that mitigate risks of violence and promote gender equality and social inclusion.

The sessions were designed to foster critical thinking and reflection on how humanitarian programs and operations can be more inclusive and responsive to diverse needs. Through interactive discussions and practical exercises, participants explored how to identify and address barriers faced by vulnerable groups, including women, children, persons with disabilities, and marginalized communities.

Mr. Agapito Soares, Coordinator of CVTL’s Youth & National Society Development (NSD) Department, reaffirmed the importance of the initiative. He noted that every staff member has a vital role in shaping an inclusive, safe, and accountable working environment. He encouraged continued commitment to applying PGI principles in all CVTL programs and services.

The training brought together 41 participants, including 19 women, 20 men, and 2 persons with disabilities. All attendees actively engaged in the sessions, contributing personal insights and sharing experiences that enriched the learning process. The inclusive composition of participants further reflected CVTL’s commitment to diversity and equal participation.

This orientation session was made possible through the generous support of the American Red Cross (AmCross), reinforcing the strong collaboration between the two organizations in promoting humanitarian values and building institutional capacity across Timor-Leste.
