November 22, 2024, Baucau – In a heartwarming event facilitated by the Restoring Family Links (RFL) program, the Naweti-Bercoli family in Venilale, Baucau, embraced their long-lost relative, Lekiloi, who had been missing since 1979 during the Indonesian occupation of Timor-Leste. This emotional reunion, after a separation of 45 years, marks a significant achievement in the efforts to reconnect families torn apart by conflict.
The reunion was made possible through a collaborative effort by the Timor-Leste Red Cross (CVTL), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), local NGOs, and the government of Timor-Leste. The Restoring Family Links program is dedicated to locating and reconnecting family members separated by war, migration, or disaster, providing hope and closure to families like Naweti-Bercoli’s.
A traditional cultural ceremony was held to welcome Lekiloi back to the family, honoring Timor-Leste’s rich heritage and offering blessings for their reunion. The family expressed heartfelt gratitude to all organizations involved, acknowledging the immense impact of their coordinated efforts.
In their message of thanks, the family emphasized the importance of ongoing initiatives to reunite families divided by past conflicts. Such efforts, they believe, foster healing and strengthen the social fabric of Timor-Leste, inspiring others to work towards reconciliation and unity.
