POULTRY RAISING COMMUNITY AND VEGETABLE PRODUCTION IN MINDELO VILLAGE, MANUFAHI MUNICIPALITY

Moises Soare, recipient of poultry raising support

Mr. Soares was supported by CVTL as a recipient of materials for raising chickens. He received ten units of zinc for healthy development, material to construct coops (nails, six meters of net), and instruction from technicians for the construction.

“On my own, I earn $50.00 dollars to support raising the chickens.” Mr. Soare went on to explain that the support from CVTL is crucial as it helps him buy from the appropriate sellers: “Because the climate of Mindelo is not the same as other municipalities, if chickens from some municipalities are brought to Mindelo, they will not survive.

CVTL delivered the money I earned myself in Mindelo and I bought a total of 5 chickens: 3 small and 2 large, including a large male. There are currently 18 chickens, including 5 chickens that I bought because one hen has produced 13 chicks. I haven’t sold this chicken because it’s still small.

I am very grateful for the support from CVTL, which gave me chickens and materials. This helps me plan for the future by selling chickens to support my family and to buy school supplies for my children.

Acaçia Nunes Martis recipient of training and support from the vegetable seed project

Mrs. Acaçia Nunes Martis says she is very happy to receive training and support vegetable seed provided by CVTL. “This support has increased my knowledge and confidence in the field, especially in sugarcane cultivation vegetable. I participated in a three-day training organized by CVTL. Through this training I learned practical techniques: step-by-step how to plant sugarcane, how to prepare and mix dry fertilizer with water, and how to prepare the soil well before planting. I can now produce organic fertilizer using locally available materials such as: cow dung, gamal tahan (Gliricidia sepium) to improve the soil, banana tree, and wood compost. I put this together in a pit and leave it to compost for one month before using.

CVTL also provided support with five kinds of vegetable seeds such as: lettuce, eggplant, tomatoes, leafy greens, and cabbage. I have grown these vegetables for the first time now and have applied the knowledge I gained from training. The results of these vegetables are very good but damaged by rain. I earned $20.00 from this farming but some I consume at home. I use the proceeds to buy my child’s school supplies and some of it I manage to put in the cooperative group.

The production of my sugarcane is now very different compared to the past. I used to do it based on my own ideas and the results were not good. The sugarcane did not grow, and people were not interested in buying it. Now I do it successfully using the knowledge I gained from training.”
