CVTL Volunteers Intensify Dengue Prevention Campaign in Dili Amid Rising Cases

Dili, 31 March 2026 – Volunteers from the Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL) carried out dengue prevention awareness sessions from 16–31 March 2026 in Terus-Nain Sub-Village, Vila-Verde Village, Vera Cruz Administrative Post, Dili Municipality.

The initiative comes in response to a surge in dengue fever cases across Timor-Leste. In February 2026 alone, more than 2,000 cases were reported, with Dili being the most affected area. The increased risk has been linked to several factors, including limited community knowledge about dengue prevention and treatment, the presence of artificial water containers serving as mosquito breeding sites, high household density, poor drainage systems, and unmanaged natural water sources.

During the campaign, CVTL volunteers distributed 242 educational posters and 116 units of abate (larvicide), reaching a total of 279 households, representing 1,395 people 681 females and 714 males.

In addition to distribution efforts, volunteers conducted practical education sessions highlighting the importance of environmental cleanliness. Community members were urged to eliminate standing water in everyday items such as buckets, cans, bottles, and discarded tyres, which can become breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti, the mosquito responsible for transmitting dengue fever.

Martina Mendonca, Coordinator of the CVTL Dili Branch, emphasized the role of community participation in combating dengue. She noted that poor waste management significantly contributes to the spread of the disease and encouraged citizens to dispose of garbage properly and remain vigilant, particularly during the rainy season when mosquito activity increases.

This activity was supported by the American Red Cross through its Rapid Response Fund (RRF).

Together, prevent dengue and protect the community.
