Dili, November 10, 2024 – The Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL) and the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), through the National Directorate of Meteorology and Geophysics (DNMG), have formalized a five-year collaboration aimed at bolstering Timor-Leste’s early warning systems and anticipatory disaster response. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by CVTL Secretary-General Mr. Luis Pedro Pinto and DNMG General Director, in a ceremony attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from the RCRC Climate Center, UNEP, RIMES, ICRC, CPA, MTC, and CVTL staff.
During the signing event, Mr. Luis Pedro Pinto emphasized the critical role of this partnership in safeguarding lives and reducing the impact of natural disasters on communities in Timor-Leste. “This collaboration prioritizes protecting lives and mitigating the impact of natural disasters. By enhancing early warning systems, we are taking a significant step towards resilience,” he stated.
The partnership is supported by funding from the Global Crisis Data Bank of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). This funding will enable the deployment of advanced technology and resources to ensure communities receive timely warnings and have access to anticipatory measures.
The event underscored the collective commitment of local and international partners to building a safer, more resilient Timor-Leste. With the expertise and cooperation of diverse organizations, the MoU is set to enhance the nation’s capacity to face natural disasters proactively.
