Safe Shelter Training in Bobonaro

CVTL has been holding a series of Shelter Training across Timor-Leste and most recently In Bobonaro. Shelter training focuses on temporary shelters, which are used to provide refuge for communities displaced due to natural disasters, conflicts, or other emergency situations. This training has a particular focus for vulnerable groups (such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with disabilities) that need a safe place to rest.

The Shelter training was held for three days and involved 28 participants, including: CVTL Volunteers from Ermera, Liquiçá, and Bobonaro Branches, Civil Protection Authority (APC) staff, and Bomberirus (firefighters). This training has been held previously in Regions I, II, and III and is now completed, and this workshop concentrated on Region IV, which was held in Bobonaro Municipality.

Mr. Dinis Gomes, CVTL Disaster Risk Reduction Manager, said the Shelter training enhances the knowledge and skills of volunteers and staff, enabling them to respond effectively in emergency situations, including natural disasters, social emergencies, and humanitarian services.

The temporary shelters are constructed using bamboo, nails, tarpaulin, wire, and rope.

Through monitoring and evaluation, CVTL ensures that in the future, trained volunteers and staff will be able to efficiently respond when communities are affected by natural disasters

Ms. Maria Verdial from the Civil Protection Authority (APC) said, the partnership between the CVTL and APC in Bobonaro Municipality is a strong collaboration that for many years has worked together to fight against natural disasters that happen to communities every year. Our joint efforts will continue to strengthen community resilience and ensure disaster preparedness and response.

In Bobonaro Municipality, communities face natural disasters every year, including heavy rains damaging land and houses, floods destroying crops, and strong winds destroying or damaging homes. We cannot predict these natural disasters, but CVTL and APC work together to provide emergency assistance to affected communities.

Ms. Maria said that she is very happy because of the new experience she gained from CVTL about Uma Mahon – Shelter, the training; it included one day of practice, which gave the opportunity to learn and do on site, build shelters with local materials, shelter construction techniques that are strong and safe: I continue to learn and contribute to the community.

Mr. Juvitu Gusmao de Arauju is a volunteer from CVTL Ermera Branch, stated that he was very pleased with the Shelter Training. He said that in the past, he had already built shelters for communities affected by disasters, but he lacked theoretical knowledge about the process. Now, I have learned both the theory and practical methods to better protect affected individuals. gaining a deeper understanding of how to apply this knowledge in emergency situations and share it with the community.

CVTL Ermera Branch has always provided shelter assistance to disaster-affected communities. However, this was the first time he received formal theoretical training. He emphasized that this training greatly helped him improve his skills and knowledge, particularly in understanding basic principles of shelter construction.

This training was conducted with the support of funds from Chronic Crisis end#.
