After 31 Years Apart, Timorese Family Reunited Through CVTL and ICRC Efforts

On 3 July 2025, the Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL), in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), successfully facilitated a long-awaited family reunification under the Restoring Family Links (RFL) program. The program is dedicated to reconnecting families separated by conflict, migration, or disaster, and plays a vital role in healing the deep wounds left by Timor-Leste’s turbulent past.

Mr. Basco Soares, who was separated from his family in 1994 during a period of unrest, had been living in Sumatra, Indonesia for over three decades. Thanks to persistent efforts by the RFL teams of CVTL and ICRC, his whereabouts were traced, and contact with his family was re-established. After 31 years, Mr. Soares finally made the emotional journey home to reunite with his loved ones.

The heartfelt reunion took place in Mea-Wain Sub-Village, Viqueque Municipality, surrounded by emotional embraces and tears of joy. This moment stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of humanitarian work and the enduring bonds of family, no matter the time or distance. CVTL and ICRC reaffirm their commitment to continuing this vital work for other families still seeking answers and reunification.
