Cross-Border Disaster Preparedness Training Unites Indonesian and Timor-Leste Red Cross Volunteers

CVTL and PMI NTT Collaborate on Disaster Preparedness Training in Belu District

From July 15th to 21st, 2024, the CVTL branches of Oe-cusse and Bobonaro participated in a comprehensive disaster preparedness training session for Red Cross volunteers, hosted by PMI NTT (Indonesian Red Cross – West Timor) in Belu District, Atambua. This initiative is part of the ongoing cross-border commitment between the two organizations, aiming to strengthen regional disaster response capabilities.

Training Focuses on Ethical and Practical Preparedness

The training covered a diverse array of subjects crucial for effective disaster response. Participants were educated on the code of ethics in the field, ensuring volunteers maintain integrity and professionalism. Additionally, practical skills in first aid, handling medical emergencies, dealing with poisoning incidents, managing logistics, and operating public kitchens were thoroughly addressed. These topics are essential for building a well-rounded and responsive volunteer force.

Enhancing Cross-Border Collaboration

This training symbolizes a significant collaboration between Indonesia and Timor-Leste, demonstrating the Red Cross’s commitment to transcending national borders in times of crisis. By preparing volunteers to handle disasters that may impact both nations, the training fosters a unified approach to emergency response, promoting mutual support and cooperation across the border.

Diverse Participation Highlights Regional Unity

The event saw the participation of 20 volunteers from various regions, including Belu and Malacca Regency in Indonesia, as well as Bobonaro and Oe-cusse in Timor-Leste. This diverse group of participants underscores the regional unity and shared commitment to disaster preparedness, enhancing the collaborative spirit between the neighbouring countries’ Red Cross societies.

Strengthening Regional Disaster Response

Through this training, the participants are now better equipped to respond to disasters that may occur along the border. The skills and knowledge gained during this session are expected to significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of disaster response efforts, ensuring timely and coordinated assistance in the event of an emergency.

Future Prospects for Continued Cooperation

The successful completion of this training marks a milestone in cross-border disaster preparedness efforts between Indonesia and Timor-Leste. Both CVTL and PMI NTT are committed to continuing this collaborative approach, with plans for future joint training sessions and initiatives aimed at further strengthening their collective ability to respond to emergencies.
