22 October 2024, Viqueque – The CVTL WATSAN team, in collaboration with dedicated members of the Ailok and Hali-Oan Aldeias communities, has made significant progress on a critical water supply project aimed at transforming access to clean water in the region. This community-driven initiative will soon provide safe, reliable water to 1,088 residents across 42 households in Viqueque, marking a major step forward for public health and sustainability in the area and supporting both community well-being and economic development.
Supported by CARE International, the project is more than just a source of water; it represents empowerment and resilience for the residents of Ailok and Hali-Oan. The commitment of local communities has been essential to the project’s success, with residents actively participating in the installation of infrastructure and in planning to ensure water access remains consistent and safe. This sense of ownership and involvement is key to the project’s sustainability, providing a model for similar initiatives throughout the region.
Severina Marques, CVTL Viqueque Branch Coordinator, stated: “Gender equity has been a central component of this project, which will directly impact the lives of 497 women and 591 men. With closer access to clean water, women and girls, in particular, will have reduced daily water collection tasks, freeing up time for education and other opportunities.” Access to safe water also reduces health risks, as cleaner water can significantly lower rates of waterborne diseases in these communities, creating a healthier, stronger future for everyone.
The CVTL team expresses heartfelt gratitude to CARE International for their generous support and partnership, which has been instrumental in making this project a reality. Through initiatives like this, CVTL and CARE are building a foundation for lasting change, showing how collective efforts can transform communities. The success of this project is a testament to the power of unity, resilience, and a shared vision.
