CVTL and Timor-Leste Authorities Hold Search and Rescue Drill Ahead of Pope Francis’ Visit

Tasi Tolu, Dili – 7 September – In preparation for Pope Francis’ highly anticipated visit to Timor-Leste from 9-11 September, the CVTL (Timor-Leste Red Cross) team, along with the F-FDTL Naval Component, Maritime Police Unit (PNTL-UPM), and the Fire Brigade, conducted a large-scale Search and Rescue (SAR) simulation at Tasi-Tolu beach today. This joint exercise focused on potential water-related emergencies as part of a broader effort to ensure safety for the thousands of pilgrims expected to converge on Dili for the Pope’s visit.

The SAR drill included scenarios involving potential drownings and water accidents, with teams showcasing their expertise in First Aid and rescue operations. With Dili’s coastal areas expected to see large crowds, the simulation emphasized the importance of being fully equipped to handle emergency situations. Volunteers and staff worked alongside military and police units, reinforcing their readiness for any incidents that may arise during this significant event.

Given the magnitude of the pilgrimage, which will bring people from all over the region, preparations such as these are crucial. The participating teams displayed a high level of coordination and commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of visitors during Pope Francis’ stay. The exercise highlighted not only the skill and preparedness of local authorities but also the importance of collaborative efforts in major events.

This important activity was made possible through the support of the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), which contributed to the training and resources needed for the successful conduct of the drill. The collaborative efforts between Timor-Leste and international partners are key to ensuring a safe and smooth event.
