January 1, 2025, Dili – Heavy rains brought flooding to Dili on New Year’s Day, affecting 59 families and displacing 354 people. The torrential downpour caused rivers to overflow, inundating several communities and prompting an urgent response from local authorities and humanitarian organizations.
Filomeno de Araujo, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Manager for the Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL), reported that CVTL teams collaborated with the Civil Protection Authority (APC) and the Fire Brigade to mobilize resources swiftly. Their efforts included conducting community assessments, providing logistical support, and offering immediate assistance to affected families.
The most severely impacted areas were Aldeias Moris Foun, Fomento II, Hali-Dollar, and Hera. Local emergency services, staff, and volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and support of those affected. These coordinated efforts highlight the resilience and dedication of all involved in the response.
CVTL’s team deployed 12 staff and volunteers, including four women, along with two vehicles to assist in the response. Their collective actions underscore the importance of community solidarity and preparedness in the face of natural disasters.
