Strengthening Disaster Readiness and Response Project Unveiled in Timor-Leste

In a bid to strengthen Timor-Leste’s resilience against disasters, Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (Timor-Leste Red Cross – CVTL) is collaborating with the American Red Cross (AmCross) project titled “Strengthening Disaster Readiness and Response in Timor-Leste.” A three-day induction workshop was held to mark the inception of the ambitious project, which is scheduled for implementation from 2024 to 2026.

The overarching objective of the project is to mitigate the impact of both natural and climate-induced disasters by bolstering community preparedness. This will be achieved through boosting disaster management capacities and systems of the local risk governance entities, and CVTL. The initiative also seeks to foster improved coordination and synergy among various stakeholders to optimize disaster risk reduction, anticipatory action, and response strategies.

Participants for this workshop came from CVTL branches (Bobonaro, Ermera, and Covalima), National Headquarters, IFRC and RCRC Climate centre. AmCross team, and CVTL General Secretary who all actively contributed to the enriching discussions. In total, the workshop brought together 16 individuals, comprising five females and eleven males, and was held in Dili from the 13th to the 16th of February 2024,

Funding for this important project comes from the American Red Cross, underscoring the commitment to investing in the safety and resilience of Timor-Leste. With this initiative poised to unfold over the next three years, the collaboration between CVTL and AmCross signals a proactive step towards building a more prepared and responsive community in the face of potential disasters.
