Timor-Leste Red Cross Strengthening Community Resilience through First Aid Training Program to Empower Local Communities

In a proactive move towards bolstering community resilience,  Timor-Leste Red Cross (CVTL) has initiated a groundbreaking First Aid training program, equipping local residents with essential life-saving skills. The comprehensive training aims to enhance the community’s understanding of First-Aid services, ensuring that individuals are well-prepared to respond effectively to emergencies, both in times of disaster and during everyday situations.

CVTL, a renowned humanitarian organization committed to alleviating human suffering, has taken a significant step towards community empowerment by organizing a series of First Aid training sessions. The initiative is designed to foster a culture of preparedness and swift response among residents, thereby minimizing the impact of emergencies and disasters.

With the objective of increasing the knowledge base of communities, the training program covers a wide range of topics, including basic first aid techniques, CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), wound care, and the proper use of emergency response equipment. Participants are guided through hands-on simulations and scenarios to ensure practical application of the skills learned during the sessions.

CVTL believes that by imparting these crucial skills to community members, the overall safety net of the region can be significantly strengthened. Whether it’s responding to accidents, sudden illnesses, or natural disasters, trained individuals can play a pivotal role in providing immediate assistance until professional help arrives.

Ms. Emidia Belo CVTL Disaster Management Coordinator, expressed the CVTL commitment to community well-being, stating, “Our aim is to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to be effective first responders in their communities. By doing so, we contribute to building a resilient society that can better withstand and recover from emergencies.”

One of local beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, recognizing the importance of being prepared for unforeseen circumstances. “This training is invaluable; it gives us the confidence and ability to assist others in times of need. We are grateful to CVTL for organizing such a vital program,” said Josefina Abi, chief of Naimeco Woman’s Group in Oecussi.

The First Aid training sessions are open to all community members, with the CVTL working closely with local authorities to ensure widespread participation. There are plans to expand the program to reach even more communities in the coming months, reinforcing the idea that everyone can be a crucial link in the chain of emergency response.

As CVTL continues to champion community preparedness, these First Aid training initiatives stand as a beacon of hope, showcasing the organization’s dedication to empowering individuals and building resilient communities.

This activity was carried out as a result of support funding from the IOM in Timor-Leste to the Municipalities of Dili, Baucau, Oecussi and Covalima, and support funding from the Mercy Corps in Timor-Leste to the Municipalities of Ainaro and Covalima. (Same Municipalities, different villages)
